A Science-Backed Method for Secure Connection
Discover the IAT framework, designed to fundamentally transform your relationships with others and yourself.
Attachment style refers to the relational rules formed in early childhood that repeat in our adult relationships.
Attachment theory was pioneered by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, who discovered over 60 years ago that a child's emotional bond with a mother (or primary caregiver) is a biological survival instinct.
Bowlby observed that children possess an innate need for proximity to a safe adult:
When the caregiver is emotionally available, sensitive, and responsive to the child's needs, the child feels safe and boldly explores the world.
When the caregiver is emotionally inconsistent, rejecting, or frightening, the child develops internal defense strategies (insecure attachment) to survive.
In childhood, these responses help the child adapt and survive in an emotionally or physically insecure environment. In adulthood, however, those same protective mechanisms become subconscious rules that hinder healthy romantic relationships.
There are 4 Attachment Styles describing how we relate to and bond with others.
Secure Attachment
Internal peace, trust, and healthy vulnerability
Able to build intimate relationships without losing independence or identity. Communicates feelings openly and navigates conflicts constructively.
Anxious Attachment
Craving closeness alongside fear of abandonment
Hyper-vigilant to partner's emotional shifts, seeking constant reassurance, and often sacrificing personal needs to maintain connection.
Avoidant Attachment
Fierce self-reliance as emotional armor
Equates intimacy with loss of freedom and control. Tends to shut down, withdraw, or suppress feelings when vulnerability is required.
Disorganized (Fearful-Avoidant)
Tormented by conflicting feelings: craves intimacy, yet fears it.
Experiences intense emotional turbulence: seeking closeness one moment and pulling back the next. Often drawn to chaotic dynamics.
Why isn't knowing our relationship mistakes enough to stop repeating them?
Attachment theory explains why some people easily form secure bonds while others repeatedly re-enact the same painful patterns with different partners. But what do you do with that information, and how do you apply it to real life? That is precisely what the IAT method resolves in my work with clients.
What is Integrated Attachment Theory™ (IAT)?
Integrated Attachment Theory™ (IAT) is an evidence-based system developed in Canada, grounded in cutting-edge neuroscience, cognitive behavioral psychology, and attachment theory. This framework is tailored for those who want not only to understand their thoughts, emotions, and relational patterns, but most importantly, to rewire them through Earned Secure Attachment.
Foundations of Secure Attachment
1. Identifying and reprogramming subconscious blueprints.
2. Authentic relationship needs and knowing how to identify them.
3. Emotional regulation and operating from the adult rather than childhood self.
4. Boundaries and respect: for oneself, core values, and healthy connection.
5. Communication that deepens connection.
6. Conscious choices and intentional actions in relationships.
By balancing these areas, Earned Secure Attachment is created.
